Who we serve

Kites Trust serves Tāngata Whaiora, their whānau, and the communities they are part of. We centre the voices and experiences of people with lived experience of mental distress and/or addiction, recognising their leadership and potential. Our strategy also embraces the vital role of Kaimahi—those who walk alongside Tāngata Whaiora—ensuring that both those we support and those who support them are empowered, resourced, and connected within a thriving peer-led ecosystem.

Community

We fly

Tāngata Whaiora engaging with Kites experience increased understanding, respect, and mutuality— leading to greater hope, empowerment, and wellbeing. Their lived experience is prioritised across all peer-led spaces, contributing to transformative change in both clinical and community environments.

Kaimahi of diverse backgrounds and experiences feel recognised, valued, and connected at Kites. They experience a strong sense of belonging and community and are supported to participate meaningfully in systems change—contributing to a more equitable, humanised, and inclusive society.

Community

We build

Foster brave, inclusive, and culturally grounded community spaces across all settings by modelling respectful, Tāngata Whaiora-led practice and influencing clinically driven environments toward equity and partnership.

Centre the wisdom of lived experience in all Kites-partnered or led projects and innovations, embedding it from the outset as a foundation for decision-making and service design.

Community

We guide

Strengthen the peer support workforce by elevating the mana, capability, and leadership of Kaimahi through active engagement in cross- sector networks, communities of practice, and access to high-quality training and lived experience mentoring-both within and beyond Kites Trust.

Deepen and expand the delivery of peer support across diverse service settings by upholding its unique values and activist roots, while navigating the complexities of integration within clinical environments. Strengthen sector relationships to enable courageous, values-based dialogue that protects the integrity of peer support and fosters collective growth as the workforce evolves
